Ready Bench
There are three (3) volunteers per shift for the ready bench. One volunteer will receive swim cards from the Clerk of Course and call the swimmer names by heat and sit them on the bench by lane order. Another volunteer will take the lead swimmers to the starting block chairs and/or place the swimmers in correct relay order. The last volunteer will receive the swimmers from the Swim Finders and keep them at the ready bench area until their names are called. This person would also act as a runner between the Clerk of Course and the ready bench to communicate any scratches, etc.
Swim Finder
There are six (6) volunteers per shift for swim finder. One person will be assigned to a group of swimmers based on age and gender. Swim Finders are necessary for young children 6 & under through the 9-10 age groups. These volunteers will stay with the children at their assigned tent area and then take them to the ready bench area when called.
Clerk of Course
There are two (2) volunteers per shift for clerk of course. The primary Clerk of Course determines lane assignments for heats with the other team's Clerk of Course. The other volunteer works side-by-side with the primary volunteer and would fill in for the Clerk of Course as necessary.
Place Ribbons
There is one (1) volunteer per shift. This person takes the printed place labels and attaches them to the appropriate ribbons and files by age group. The volunteer would be working indoors at the scoring table. If necessary, this volunteer orders the place ribbons before the beginning of the season and is the custodian of the unclaimed ribbons, which are stored and filed in a file box. This volunteer is also responsible for ensuring the file box is available at weekly practices.
Scoring Table
There are three (3) volunteers per shift. The secondary scorers receive the swimmers' time cards from the runner and circle the official time for each swimmer. The primary scorer enters the official times into the computer software and prints out the team scores and the place ribbon labels. The first shift primary scorer is responsible for setting up the computer/printer and printout the swim cards/heat sheets prior to the meet. These volunteers report to the Meet Manager.
Meet Officials
The six (6) meet officials require certification and training. All NWAL swim meets are required to have trained officials on deck during meets. Candidates for certification as Referees, Stroke and Turn Officials, and Starters shall attend training and take and pass a test. Preparing to be a Meet Official requires pre-season training. Please contact the NWAL Representative for more information. Training is only a couple of hours and some is completed poolside.
Scribe
There are three (3) volunteers per shift with one (1) Scribe per lane. The other team provides the other three (3) Scribes. The Scribes will get the event sheets from the runner. The Scribe records the three (3) times for the swimmer after each heat. The Scribe would then hand off the sheet to the runner.
Runner
There is one (1) volunteer per shift. The runner will work together with the Runner from the other team to pick up the event sheets from the Clerk of Course and give to the Scribe. The runner will then pick up the sheets from the Scribe and take them to the scoring table after each event.
Floater
There are three to five (3-5) volunteers per shift. Each meet we have last-minute volunteer cancellations. These volunteers will not be assigned any specific task, but they may be asked to perform any of the above duties. You will be requested to check in with the Volunteer Coordinator 15 minutes prior to the start of your shift, and if you do not receive a position, then listen for announcements requesting your service.
