Frequently Asked Questions

Who Are We?

The Champions Park Stars (CP Stars) Swim Team is a late spring/early summer activity for children and young adults ages 4–18. The team is open to residents of Champions Park, Champions Centre Estates, Champions Park North, Champions Racquet Village, Champions Creek, and Champions Park North Estates.

Why Do We Have a Swim Team?

Swim team is a great activity for both kids and families. It helps young swimmers learn goal setting, discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship, while participating in a fun, family-oriented community activity.

How Does the Season Work?

The CP Stars compete in the Northwest Aquatic League (NWAL), which organizes summer league swimming for 100+ neighborhood teams across the Houston area.

Each year, the CP Stars are placed in a six-team division. During the season:

  • Each team competes in five dual meets against the other teams in the division.
  • The regular season concludes with a Divisional Championship Meet where all six teams compete together.
  • After divisionals, swimmers who meet qualifying times may choose to participate in optional invitational meets.

Practices typically begin in late April, with Time Trials in early May. Weekly meets follow until the season concludes with Divisionals and Invitationals in late June.

Is Swim Team Highly Competitive?

While there are many strong swimmers in NWAL, the CP Stars focus on personal improvement and team participation. We encourage swimmers to work toward their own goals while enjoying the social and team aspects of the sport.

In addition to practices and meets, we host several team social events throughout the season.

Can My Child Learn to Swim on Swim Team?

Swimmers should already have basic swimming ability before joining the team. Because practices are organized by age group, coaches are not able to provide extensive beginner instruction during team practices.

However, many coaches offer private lessons for swimmers who want extra help improving their skills.

Families may also consider spring swim readiness programs offered by local year-round teams such as:

  • Premier Aquatics (PACK)
  • Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club (FLEET)

Can Year-Round or Competitive Swimmers Participate?

Yes. Many swimmers participate in both summer league and year-round swimming. However, some year-round clubs may have participation guidelines, so families should check with their club if applicable.

For swimmers interested in more advanced competition, year-round programs such as Premier Aquatics (PACK) or Cypress Fairbanks Swim Club (FLEET) offer additional training opportunities.

How Do I Register for the CP Stars?

To register, return to the Home Page and click the “Online Registration” button at the top right of the page. You may also contact a team board member for assistance.

Weather Policy

For safety, we follow American Red Cross guidelines regarding thunderstorms.

  • If thunder is heard or lightning is seen, swimmers must immediately leave the pool and the fenced pool area.
  • If this occurs during practice, coaches will keep swimmers outside the gate area until they are picked up by a parent or designated adult.
  • Practice may resume 30 minutes after the last sound of thunder or sighting of lightning.
  • Practices will continue during light rain, as long as the bottom of the pool remains visible.
